WILMINGTON — Delaware’s newest law school now has a way to set law students interested on a shorter and cost-effective timeline to get their degrees.

Wilmington University unveiled its 3+3 Law Degree Pathway that gives its students the ability to complete a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor degree in six years. That’s one year less than the average length of education for law students.

Those students on the 3+3 Law Degree Path will pay the undergraduate tuition rate for the first year of law school, or 30 credits, saving thousands of dollars in the process. The higher education institution has a tuition of $12,330, already significantly under the national average, according to U.S World News & Report Data.

To be eligible for the program, students must complete 75% of their undergraduate courses. The program also offers a one-credit LSAT preparation seminar and advising support.

“Our tuition is competitive already,” WilmU Chief Academic Officer Denise Wells said. “That makes us very competitive and affordable to interested students who are seeking less time and less cost.”

WilmU has long been known for its flexibility for students with online options long before the COVID-19 pandemic pushed students remotely as well as its affordable rates for Delawareans. That flexibility also makes it attractive for many seeking a second degree to upskill or transition to a new career path, as well as students of all ages.

That flexibility is the same model that WilmU looks to continue at its law school, which its president Dr. LaVerne Harmon announced in 2022. The law school received provisional accreditation earlier this year, and the first class is expected to graduate in spring 2026.

The 3+3 Law Degree Pathway allows students of many different majors, including the humanities, to get on the fast track for a law degree. The early advisement for students that have less than 30 credits or are in their first year is critical, Wells said. That gives the academic advisors enough time to help set the student on how to plan their courses to maximize time and cost savings.

As long as a student can fit the School of Law in your fourth degree of their program, they are eligible for the Pathway program.

“We can see there’s an interest and a need for students to get from point A to point B in the most economical way possible while maintaining rigor and academic quality,” Wells said. “The idea of accelerated offerings was always there, so it’s about what we can accommodate for students that are motivated to pursue this high-level professional degree.”

Before WilmU offers any accelerated education programs, Wells said there’s studies on whether the demand is there from its professional partners as well as students. In this case, the legal sector in Delaware has been waiting and the students are lining up. Applications are still up, and each class is growing in size.

“Our mission has always been to open doors and remove barriers,” Harmon said in a prepared statement. “This pathway gives students a clear and affordable route to the legal profession, while preparing them to serve others with integrity and purpose.”
