Gallery One announced its Three’s a Crowd exhibition will be on display through Tuesday, April 30, at 32 Atlantic Ave., Ocean View.

It’s often said that two’s company, three’s a crowd, but this month at Gallery One, good things can also come in threes. Dating back to the 1600s, the old saying is typically used in circumstances where a third person is not welcome when two people want to be alone with each other.

In Joyce Condry’s acrylic, “No Vacancy,” two pelicans evict a third interloper.

Of her pastel, “Seats Taken,” Cindy Beyer said, “Marco Island is the perfect spot for pelican watching. It took me some time to get close to these big birds on the rocks. I had a brief moment to shoot them before they flew off. For our theme, three’s a crowd, I thought it would be fun to paint one flying away after being pushed off the rock as if the other two said, ‘Beat it, Bubby, this seat’s taken.”’

For artists, the proverb also conjures up the rule of threes. The principle holds weight not just in painting, but also in interior design and photography. Seeing an odd number of things stimulates the eye to move around, resulting in a more interesting visual experience. Lesley McCaskill’s acrylic, “A Gaggle of Geese,” is awash in a striking palette of blues and greens. In Cheryl Wisbrock’s watercolor, “Three Kayakers,” strong shadows and a relatively dark palette emphasize the bright, sunlit area where the kayaks are headed. The rule of threes is well illustrated in Dale Sheldon’s acrylic, “Three White Pelicans,” and in Michelle Marshall’s graphic acrylic, “Guardians of the Beach.”

Laura Hickman’s acrylic, “Garden in Ravello,” tells a story. “At the glorious Rose Terrace in Ravello’s Villa Cimbrone, three dogs greeted me, but only two of my four-legged friends led me on the grand tour, so obviously sometimes three is a crowd,” said Hickman.

Gallery One is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day.
